UBCiModel© (a.k.a. iModel110) was developed in 2012 after a comprehensive 6-year research study completed by Dr. Abedini as Vancouver Landfill, the largest MSW landfill in British Columbia (BC), Canada. Utilizing the model in more than 100 landfill projects within Canada and internationally, the UBCiModel© is now known as one of the most powerful LFG generation models available in the industry. As opposed to assigning a fix methane yield to MSW, this model utilizes a variable methane generation potential (L˳) developed based on the dry decomposable organic carbon (DOCdry) historically deposited at the landfill. The variable L˳ reflects the historical changes in waste composition, recycling, and disposal strategies. Degradability and moisture content of each waste component, as well as several other factors relating to climate, landfill design and operation procedures, define the ultimate bioavailability of the total deposited DOC and ultimately the historical and future projection of L˳ for each year throughout the landfill’s lifespan.

ISWM uses the UBCiModel© to more accurately estimate methane generation rates from landfills and to properly design landfill gas management, control and utilization systems. Furthermore, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission regulators and policy-makers can utilize this model as a basis to more accurately quantify and predict the GHG emissions from municipal landfills and to develop realistic GHG inventories at national and/or international levels. In addition to accuracy of this model’s estimates, UBCiModel© can be used for:

  • Feasibility assessment of Gas to Energy (GtE) and Offset Credit initiatives
  • Phase by Phase LFG Generation Assessment
  • Determination of LFG collection System Capture Efficiency
  • Gas Generation Breakdown with regard to Organic Waste Categories
  • Assessment of Waste Diversion Impacts on Future LFG Generation
  • Feasibility assessment for application of Bio-Systems (BioCover, BioWindow, BioFilters) with respect to realistic Methane Loading Rates

ISWM Consulting has been involved in numerous GHG Emissions Control and Emission Reduction (ER) System Design and ER Credit Quantification projects for MSW landfills. Our historical activities include traditional GHG ER Credit projects associated with Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) projects, as well as GHG ER credits generated from landfills through the biological and thermal oxidization of methane (a GHG 34 times more potent than CO2).

ISWM Consulting has conducted numerous GHG reduction credit assessments, provided third-party due diligence for assessments for GHG credits, and filed applications on behalf of clients with registries and agencies for mandatory reporting and voluntary registration of GHG credits.

ISWM Consulting’s services for GHG reporting include:

  • Determining applicability
  • Developing GHG emissions reduction strategies and systems
  • Preparing GHG monitoring plans
  • Conducting required monitoring and quantifying GHG emissions reduction levels
  • Collecting GHG monitoring data
  • Preparing GHG reports
  • Coordinating with accredited GHG verification bodies

Surface Scan Emission Quantification Technique (SSEQT) is an EASY, COST EFFECTIVE and ACCURATE methodology for quantification of FUGITIVE Methane Emissions from MSW landfills regardless of size, shape and location.

Methane (CH4) is a naturally occurring GHG with a global warming potential of 28 to 36 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 100-year timeframe. In a 20-year timeframe, methane is 86 time more potent that CO2. The atmospheric concentration of CHhas increased since 1750 due to human activities and is now ~150% higher than the pre-industrial times. Quantification of fugitive methane from landfills are usually very costly.  Furthermore, at Landfills where the emission levels are significantly reduced by application of an Active LFG Collection System or via Biological Methane Oxidation techniques, measurement of methane emission levels is very challenging and sometimes impossible.  With an innovative technique (pat#2,955,844) developed by Dr. Abedini, ISWM Consulting Ltd. offers very cost effective services for:

  • Quantification of Methane Emissions from MSW landfill
  • Evaluation and Inspection of Landfill Closure System and Identification of methane emission “Hotspots”
  • Inspection of LFG System and Locating Gas Leaks
  • Quantification of Biocover Effectiveness in Methane Emission Reduction

Landfill gas (LFG) management facilities, also known as Gas Collection and Control Systems (GCCS) are a common and major component of most engineered landfills. They are designed to help control odours, minimize release of non-methanogenic organic compound (NMOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) to the atmosphere, and increase safety by controlling gas lateral migration.

ISWM Consulting’s founder and CEO, Dr. Abedini, has a long successful track record of designing, construction supervision and inspection of LFG management systems. ISWM Consulting can deliver individual landfill services as needed, or we can provide a full complement of integrated services based on our vast experience with all landfill components. We provide monitoring, system troubleshooting, and management of all the data it takes to keep a system functioning efficiently.

ISWM Consulting offers the following services for the Landfill gas management system facilities:
